Two Wheels Good, Four Wheels Bad; the Motorbike Road Trip

Ever since the internal combustion engine was invented, the road trip has offered a romantic allure for the traveller. But whereas journeying by car merely does the job, travelling by motorbike is associated with the most carefree of all road tripping experiences.

Travel by motorbike offers many things a car deprives us of; first and foremost a much stronger connection with the landscape through which you pass. Motorcyclists often speak fondly of the sounds and smells of the outside world that they enjoy as they pass. This is something that their car driving counterparts tend to miss out on, being confined to the insides of their vehicle.

Motorcyclists' tales of the road have often been shared with armchair travellers in the form of books, films and TV documentaries. One of the most famous motorbike trips to be enjoyed by the mainstream was undertaken by Argentinean-born revolutionary icon, Che Guevara. The image of Guevara's face is said to be the most reproduced image of all time, appearing as a fashion statement on posters, album covers and t-shirts which can be found in student's bedrooms the world over, even though many probably have little idea of Guevara's life and what he stood for.

Guevara wrote many books, but his best known publication, "The Motorcycle Diaries", details a young Guevara as he travels through South America with his friend Alberto Grando on a 1939 Norton 500 motor-cycle. It was the poverty and persecution that he witnessed during his travels that fuelled Guevara's desire to fight and die for the people of the lower classes.

A famous but fictional motorbike road trip story is told through the film "Easy Rider", which features two bikers travelling through the American south to experience the land and its people and explore the American dream. The story follows their adventures as they encounter hippies, narcotics and eventually meet their doom at the hands of red necks, during their search for spiritual freedom.

More recently, the TV series "The Long Way Round" followed the biking adventures of actors Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman. The show documented their trip from London to New York which took them across Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia and Canada. Viewers were able to share McGregor and Boorman's pain and pleasure, which included incredible scenery, amazing kindness and generosity of strangers, but also breakdowns, crashes, injuries, mosquito bites, and even being threatened at gunpoint. However, with a little help from the locals, and of course a good motorbike insurance policy, McGregor and Boorman survived the incredible journey intact; and the trip inspired the adventurous duo to embark on another biking adventure from John O Groats to South Africa two years later, which was also televised.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published several reports to shed light on the causes and trends in motorcycle fatalities occurring in the U.S. Even though numbers do not lie, they can often be overwhelming to make sense of.

The Best Three Places for Bike Riding in Sydney

There is no shortage of bike riding locations, but I will talk about my favorite three of them.

The Blue Mountains is located around 60 kilometers west of Sydney city, it is a National Park and it is a beautiful destination in its own right. Now the Faulconbridge Point ride goes for about 22 kilometers, so it is not a short bike ride. You will need to get a train to Faulconbridge station, from there you get off the train and cross over the Great Western Highway and make your way to the start of the trail.

It is a dirt trail so it is much more suited to mountain biking rather than other types of bicycle rides. It is a long trail but very rewarding, it will give you some magnificent views of the Grose Vale, the Grose Road and looking down into the Grose river, which besides the name is one of the more beautiful views of the Blue Mountains.

The second bicycle riding location that I would recommend is Sydney Olympic Park. In the year 2000, Sydney hosted the Olympic Games. The Sydney Olympic Park bike ride commences actually in the Olympics circuit, so it is custom-made obviously for bicycles and it takes you past a lot of buildings and areas that we used during the Olympics.

This is still in operation today and it is a major sporting center for Sydney.

In eastern suburbs, Centennial Park in Sydney is my personal favorite location for riding bicycles. You can hire bikes anywhere around there, so if you are on vacation, there a number of spots in and around Centennial Park that you can hire a bike, depending on your age, size and disposition.

There is a dedicated bike track, so that means you are not going to be traveled by vehicles or indeed horses, joggers, or anything else. Only bike riders use that particular track.

Centennial Park is a very popular park, beautiful views and within in the middle of the suburbia and quit busy Sydney beautiful parks great spots for families, for picnics, for sporting teams, you can stop by and watch some rugby, soccer, all sports are going on.

A lot of people will ride a horse in there, but there are specific spots for riding horses so it will be no problem at all. Centennial Park is my pick for places where you can ride bikes in the city, because it is a very beautiful area. Although the blue mountains has probably got the edge in terms of natural beauty Centennial Park is very accessible, it is very easy to hire bikes there, very popular and it can be a very flat easy ride, you can go as far or as little as you like.

A Look at Some of the Mountain Bike Parts Available

One may have never thought about the parts that are required to make a mountain bike while riding it. But sometimes it becomes important to know the parts. You never know where they will help you. Some of the mountain bike parts are:

The Bottom bracket which is an attachment of the crank set to body of the bike. It can be replaced or adjusted.

The Brake cable: it is a cable that is used to attach the brake lever to the mechanism.

Brake lever: It is a handlebar lever used for activation of the brakes. The brake on th left side is for the front and the one on the right is the rear brake.

The bike consists of a chain circular set of links which transfers the power from the chain ring to moving parts of the wheel.

Chain ring: these are toothed rings which are attached to the crank that holds the chain and are important mountain bike parts.

Crank Lever: it extends from the bottom bracket to the pedal of the bike and transfers the power to the chain rings and is one of the mountain bike parts.

Derailleur Mechanism is required for moving the chain from one part to another.

The down tube Section of frame extends downward from the stem to the bottom of the bracket.

Dropout cut slots are provided at the bottom of front fork. They are designed to allow the axle of the wheel.

Front Shock absorbers are provided on the front fork.

Handlebar: a horizontal bar is fixed to the stems which have hand grips at its end and the brake levers and shifters are attached to it.

Headset Mechanism is in the front of frame which connects the front fork to the stem and also the handlebars.

The spokes are attached to the Hub Center section of the wheel.

The end of the spoke in the rim is held by a nipple threaded receptacle.

Rear Shock absorbers are provided on the rear tire in most of the dual-suspension bikes which is another of the important mountain bike parts.

Rim: it is a metal ring with a U-shaped cross section which connects the spokes to the tire which is on the outside.

A Saddle Seat is the part one should not sit on when riding steep downhill.
A Seat post supports the post for the saddle. It is mounted into the seat tube with a mechanism for changing its height.

Skewer Metal rod: it goes all the way through the core or the hub.

The crank arms are attached to a spindle freely rotating axle. It is a part of the bottom bracket.

There are thick wires which join the hub to the rim. The tension in it is adjusted by means of a nipple available on the rim side.

Tire: they are on the outer part of the rim. They make contact with the road while riding and also provide a grip.

The Top tube is present in the top bar of the bicycle frame.

The spikes are attaches to the wheel hub Center of the wheel.

The steering tube is attached to the handlebar by means of a stem piece.

Who Needs A Custom Built Road Bike

Biking is such a popular sport and there are many wide varieties of bikes on the market, in a varied pricing range. But for those serious athletes, the custom-built bike might be the way to go.

Ever heard of Randonneuring? Sounds French, doesn't it? Well, the sport originated in France, but is becoming more and more popular in the United States.

Randonneuring is "long-distance unsupported endurance cycling." You may have heard of it as "Ultra Long Distance Cycling."

The joy of this sport is that it is non-competitive. Riders indulge in friendly camraderie, not trying to drive each other into the ground. And because the rides are "unsupported" - the idea is to be self sufficient.

There are many events held for Randonneur riding, but the names of winners are not posted. Rather, the names of the riders who have finished the course are posted in alphabetical order. It's not about beating anyone, it's about challenging yourself.

These events consist of rides of 200, 300, 400, 600, and 1000 KM for individual riders. Each of these distances is called a "brevet." There are probably events being held in your area, even if you've never heard of them before. Search the web under "randoneuring" or "ultra long distance cycling" and you'll find any local clubs.

Now, it's when road riders want to participate in racers and ultra long distance cycling that they'll want a custom-built road bike rather than one purchased just off the rack.

It's not that bikes purchased just off the rack aren't perfectly serviceable for most riders, but serious athletes - professionals, and those just below the professoinal level - will certainly want a custom-built bike - one that is precisely fitted to their body. (Customized bikes, and custom-built bikes, are two different things. Customized bikes swap out various pieces for better fitting pieces, whereas custom-built bikes are built to certain specifications from the ground up.)

Triathletes are another group of people who need custom-built bikes. In a triathlon, the participants have to swim, cycle and then run for certain distances. It's an incredibly grueling sport and so the cycle has to be the lightest, the most sturdiest, and the best fitted piece of equipment they have.

Many bike companies offer customized road bikes, and while they are expensive, they're not as expensive as they used to be because with new technology always comes lower prices. It's possible to purchase your customized bike from a local dealer, but for a custom-built bike, most likely you'll have to go online.

Companies that offer custom-builds include Guru, Waterford, and Titus. Do a search on the web to find them, and they'll tell you all the information you need to know to get a custom-built bike.

A Basic Guide To Import Bike Insurance

In 2007 alone, 1000's of Chinese bikes, scooters and mopeds were imported into the UK. This seems to be a growing trend, with more and more manufacturers importing them into the UK. Currently an estimated 450 separate manufacturer's import into the country and this grows every year. With this in mind, more insurers are joining the game to get these insured. However, import bike insurance can still be difficult to find.

So why buy a Chinese import bike? For one, they are generally half the price of a standard moped or scooter; this is despite the import costs. They are normally based on current mopeds and scooters manufactured by major companies, just with a different name on them. These are also known as replica bikes. A majority of these bikes will need registering in the UK, at a cost of 55.00, pounds a small price to pay considering the cheaper cost for the bike itself.

Import bike insurance can be tough to find, a majority of insurers and brokers have never heard of the vehicle you're looking to insure, and that's usually where the conversation ends. However, with the popularity of these scooters and mopeds, more and more insurers are providing competitive schemes to support the demand on these types of vehicles.

One of the main problems with import bikes and in particular the import bike insurance is that many of these vehicles parts are not readily available. In the event of a claim and the bike needs repairing, it is difficult and costly for the insurer to source the parts and authorised repairers. That is why many of the insurers will opt out of offering a fully comprehensive quotation, or they may offer an expensive quote, often more than the value of the vehicle itself.

As many import bikes, scooters and mopeds are based on current models manufactured by major names such as Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha. The parts and spares can be easily picked up at the usual local repairer. This all helps with the insurance side of things, but with over 450 different import manufacturers, you can imagine how difficult the parts are to find.

Another problem with import bikes, scooters and mopeds, is that they require registering in the UK. Many are sold without first being registered. However, before registering a vehicle, it requires insurance, and many insurers will not insure without a registration number plate, a perfect catch 22 situation. Although many insures understand this and are providing this insurance, it still can be difficult to track this type of insurance cover down.

The most popular scooter on the road today, is the Baotian BT 50cc, an import bike, over 1000 were imported during 2007, figures supplied by the MCIA (The Motor Cycle Industry Association Limited). This gives you an idea of just how popular these bikes are, out selling major manufacturers like Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha.

You may ask yourself, where can I buy these bikes? Well, many local dealers are starting to sell them, and there are plenty of bargains available on EBay's auction site. The majority are sold through internet only bike shops, delivered direct to your door, again this promotes the problem of repairs and spare parts, many of these vehicles are not sold with any warranty.

In short, these bikes, scooters and mopeds are a perfect way of commuting to and from work. They are cheap to buy, cheap to run, very economical, and parking is generally not a problem, and with more insurers realising the demand on these bikes, they are helping on the insurance availability, cost and cover.

By now, almost everyone has seen a pocket Bike Some people may think it's a toy, and some people may see it as a real motorcycle, only smaller. The truth is, pocket bikes and Super Pocket Bikes are really machines of a sport that has been sweeping Europe and Japan for over 5 years.

They are well built with an aluminum or steel frame and will be a fun and sleek style of bike. They are not incredibly fast, but will have speed enough to get over hills and have a lot of fun. There is lots of fun to be had with these wonderful little machines.

Americans got their first glimpse of pocket bikes just a few years ago. They were brought here from Italy and cost upwards of $4000 a pocket bike. That is what really kept the sport from growing here in the U.S. While many found these pocket bikes cool and interesting, not many people were willing to buy a mini motorcycle for almost the price of a real motorcycle.

Some pocket bikes are run on gas and some on electricity. Gas models are faster than the electrics. If the bikes are for a younger person the electric might be a good idea. The electrics have there own charger and you simply put them on the charger overnight. Pocket bikes were very expensive when they first came out but prices have dropped very much.

Fortunately for us today, there are several manufacturers that have taken the principals pioneered and tested by these original manufacturers and applied them to the pocket bikes and super pocket bikes you see today. Costs have been cut, and more technologically advanced manufacturing plants have further driven down costs. However, some manufacturers also cut the quality of the parts and motor that goes into a pocket bike.

So what is the difference between a pocket bike & a super pocket bike? A pocket bike is smaller in size and lighter in weight. If you have ever dreamed of competing in a motorcycle race or event, the smaller pocket bike is the way to go. It accelerates very fast, reaches the finish line in a matter of a few seconds and has a very flat torque curves. This is ideal for racing. These smaller pocket bikes also have less bells-and-whistles for the sake of weight reduction. Weight, in any vehicle, is the enemy.

Pocket bikes can be found in many stores. You can find them in department stores or in some of the motorcycle shops as well. There are many great deals online. It will depend on the type and the amount of money that you want to spend on your pocket bike. It is going to be so much fun shopping for the perfect bike for you.

Depending on what country and or state you live in there will be differing rules and regulations for riding these great little bikes. Some places demand that you must be licensed to ride on the road while others say because the motors are of a smaller size you may ride them on the road without a license.

Road Rash - What Happens When You are Hit by a Car?

We protect ourselves every time we leave on a ride. We have our helmets, gloves and even mirrors. But these things cannot protect us from a motorist running a red light or talking on their phone when they should be looking where they are going.

A cyclist will always end up on the losing side of a car versus bike accident. Our bikes and bodies do not have crumple zones to absorb the physical forces of a collision, so even a minor impact can have catastrophic results on our bodies and our lives.

Things to know before you ride.

Having handled many bike accident cases, I have found that there are some steps that you need to take even before you hit the road to make sure you are protected in the event that you really do hit the road.

First, every cyclist needs good health insurance coverage - No Exception. While the driver that hits you is legally liable for the costs of your medical care, they do not have to pay these costs as you need them - only once your case is ready to settle or you win a verdict. Having health insurance means that you will be able to quickly get all of the medical care you need. Carry a copy of your insurance card in your bike bag.

You should also consider a disability insurance policy, especially if you cannot afford to go without income for at least six months. Bike accidents often result in severe injuries that can keep you from your job for months. This insurance will replace much of the income you may lose as a result of your injuries.

Increase your Uninsured/Underinsured motorist coverage (UM/UIM) under your auto insurance policy. Many auto policies will extend such benefits to you even when you are hit while riding your bike. This is very important to have as you may likely have to pay back your health insurance company for the money they spent on your medical care out of the proceeds of your accident settlement with the at-fault driver. Large amounts of UM/UIM coverage will help ensure that you will still recover for your losses even if you have to repay your health carrier. Ask your insurance agent about the availability of such coverage.

What to do after an accident.

Everything that you say and do after an accident will affect the final value of your case. Generally, you should avoid making any statements about what caused the accident except to the police or emergency personnel. If the other person was at fault for the accident, their insurance company will contact you and ask to take your statement. If you do not clearly recall what happened, you should talk to a lawyer before making any statements to the insurance company. Likewise, do not sign anything unless you are positive of what it is you are signing.

You should quickly seek medical treatment and follow your doctor's advice. Many of us prefer to treat with chiropractors and massage therapists for our injuries; however, the other driver's insurance company may not consider such treatments unless prescribed by an actual medical doctor. Also, starting a physical therapy program sooner rather than later can take months off of your recovery time.

Record all of your accident related expenses. I recommend that my clients save all receipts in an envelope that they give to me when they have finished all treatment.

Determining the value of your case.

You are entitled to recover for:

1. Damage to your bike and other property. In most cases this element of damages is settled relatively early in the case. Make sure that the at-fault driver's insurance company pays fair market value for your damaged bike. Insurance adjustors are rarely familiar with the cost of upgraded wheel sets and gruppos and may simply look at the Internet for used bike prices to estimate your damages. Provide receipts for all upgrades, if possible. Have your LBS give you an estimate of the fair market value of your bike.

2. Any physical injuries, including permanent impairment, sustained in the accident.

3. Past and future pain and suffering resulting from your injuries.

4. Income you lost because you could not work after the accident. Document all of the time you missed from work either due to your injuries or having to attend appointments.

5. Any loss of future earnings due to your permanent, accident-related impairment. In the event that your injuries were so substantial that you may not be able to work in the same job again, you should immediately contact an attorney to handle your claim.

6. Medical expenses for the treatment of your injuries. If another insurance company has paid your accident-related medical expenses, you will most likely be required to repay such expenses that the insurer paid out of the proceeds of your settlement.

7. Any out-of-pocket expenses. You are entitled to reimbursement for all of the out-of-pocket expenses you incurred as a result of your accident (prescription medications, medical devices, etc...).

8. The spouse of an injured person is entitled to "loss of consortium" damages. This is meant to compensate the husband or wife of the accident victim for the injured person's inability to contribute to the household.

Finally, consider hiring a lawyer who is experienced in this area of law. Studies show that accidents victims receive substantially larger settlements when represented by a lawyer, even after the lawyer's fees are paid.
